Here are some pictures from the Chihuly exhibit at the Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden. I was fortunate enough to go with our good friend Tom Retz, who is a glass blower. He gave me the skinny on how the pieces were created and displayed. Chihuly is pretty controversial: he has over 250 people working for him and he gives them general instructions on what to do - and then gets all the credit for the finished product. Not sure I would call him an "artist," as he doesn't ever execute the designs. It was nice to see the exhibit, though, and the garden was as gorgeuous as ever!

Long time no post
I am a terrible blogger. I just don't have the time or memory to put things up regularly and, frankly, our lives aren't that interesting - just variations of work, sleep, and caregiving. I've decided to focus on funny Claire stories instead, as she is getting to the age where she says and does funny things, and most of you are probably reading this (if you are reading it all) to hear about Claire.
Claire Funnyism #1: "Family Recipe"
Apparently, one of the aftercare workers was playing some sort of make-believe game with a group of children earlier this week. One of the children had an "invisible" egg and was asked to draw a picture of what was inside it. All the kids gathered around, excitedly, to see what she had drawn and Claire walks by -- totally uninterested in all the fuss -- and dismissively says "Oh, that's just a family recipe" and runs off to play. The aftercare person thought this was hilarious, and I think it is just more evidence that we have a very strange child.
Claire Funnyism #2: "Beading"
While I was cleaning up Claire's room (I know, Dad, SHE should be doing it), I pulled back the covers on her bed to find a hoard of stuffed animals each with its own beaded necklace. At night, before she goes to bed, she has been making beaded necklaces and decorating her animals. Could be worse; she could be spreading toothpaste on the walls. As a side note: I took her to a bead store on Monday and she was almost speechless, which is highly unusual. After a minute of gazing, wide-eyed at all the different beads, she whispered "They are so beautiful!"

Claire + gorilla
We have survived our second week of school, capped off with a mighty ferocious storm that uprooted trees and powerlines throughout Phoenix. Claire was off on Friday due to damage to the school, so we made some banana cupcakes, danced, painted, and went out to lunch with her friend Evamarie. I had my first class at ASU as well, so this week has actually been pretty eventful. Here is a photo from her trip to the zoo on her birthday.

3rd Birthday
Claire turned 3 on the 15th and we celebrated with a small party at our clubhouse. Some of her friends came and did some swimming, and Claire had a wonderful time playing hostess. Here are some pictures from her birthday outing to the zoo and from her party. The cake was (as requested) supposed to be a stegosaurus (in this picture, on its side). We have some video to post as well, but that will probably be next week.
